Vessel blown off quay in heavy wind – shore crane damaged in process – vessel negligent – port of Genoa not unsafe.

 The Facts

 The vessel, a container ship was berthed at the container terminal at Genoa.

 During heavy wind and rain occurring in the late afternoon, the vessel’s lines rendered, her aft springs broke and she was blown some distance from the quay.

 The vessel was stabilized and re-berthed.

 At the furthest point, the vessel’s bow was clear of the quay with its stern 50m away.

 The entire incident took approximately 20 minutes.

 At some point during the incident the vessel’s right bow flare struck one of 5 shore cranes causing severe damage.

 Terminal owners claimed damages from vessel owners.
