The facts
Ten sandfilter tanks were shipped from Porto Marghera, Italy to Mobile, Alabama under a bill of lading.
One of the tanks was lost and another damaged during the voyage and cargo interests (shippers, receivers and consignees) claimed damages from the contractual carriers who were not the owners of the vessel.
